Siri AI is the headline feature of macOS 27 Golden Gate, so it's a surprise to finish the upgrade, press Command-Space, and find the same old experience. There's no new Siri app, no conversational answers, and nothing in System Settings that obviously turns it on.

That's by design. Siri AI launches as a beta with several gates in front of it: supported hardware, matching language settings, an eligible region, and a waitlist. Here's how to get through each one.

Requirement 1: A supported Mac

Every Mac that runs Golden Gate supports Siri AI, because every one of them has Apple silicon capable of Apple Intelligence. That includes all M-series Macs and the MacBook Neo.

There is a split in capability, though. The advanced Siri AI model, with more expressive voices, upgraded dictation, and more on-device processing, requires an M3 or later with at least 12 GB of memory. M1 and M2 Macs, and any Mac with 8 GB, get Siri AI with the more limited model.

Requirement 2: Device language and Siri language must match

This is where most people get stuck. Apple requires your device language and Siri language to be set to the same supported language. At launch, the only supported language is English.

Check your Mac's language: System Settings > General > Language & Region. English should be at the top of the Preferred Languages list.

Check Siri's language: System Settings > Siri, then look at the Language setting.

If either is set to something else, or they don't match, the Siri AI option won't appear. After changing them, quit and reopen System Settings before looking again.

A note on English variants: one user reported the waitlist option didn't appear until they switched from British English to American English. It's a single report, but if you've matched both settings to British or Australian English and see nothing, try US English.

Requirement 3: An eligible region

Siri AI's availability depends on the region of your Apple Account, not your physical location.

  • Most regions: available with English settings.
  • European Union: Siri AI isn't available on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch in the EU, but it is available on the Mac with an EU Apple Account, as long as both device language and Siri language are set to English.
  • Mainland China: Siri AI doesn't currently work with an Apple Account in mainland China.

If you're in the EU and gave up after reading that Siri AI isn't available there, check again on your Mac. The restriction applies to Apple's mobile devices.

Step-by-step: joining the waitlist

Once the requirements are met:

  1. Open System Settings > Siri.
  2. If Siri is turned off, turn it on first.
  3. Click Try Siri AI (Beta).
  4. Follow the prompts: choose a voice, complete voice enrollment, and review the privacy settings.
  5. You're added to the waitlist.

When your wait is over, Siri AI downloads automatically and macOS lets you know it's ready. The new Siri app becomes available after you're enrolled.

If you used Siri AI during the beta: you need to join the waitlist again on the release version.

How long is the wait?

Apple doesn't give a time. It's a staged rollout. Early reports range from getting in almost instantly to still waiting after several hours. The waitlist system has been part of Golden Gate since the early betas, with server-side messages to tell people roughly how long they'll wait.

While you wait:

  • Keep the Mac on Wi-Fi and plugged in so the model download can start as soon as you're approved.
  • Make sure you have free space. Siri AI and Apple Intelligence models take several gigabytes, and on a nearly full drive the download can stall.
  • Let Spotlight finish indexing. Siri AI relies on Golden Gate's new semantic index for personal context. Even once approved, answers about your own files will be incomplete until indexing is done.

Siri AI still missing? Troubleshooting

No "Try Siri AI" option at all:

  • Recheck that device language and Siri language are both English and match exactly.
  • Restart the Mac after changing languages.
  • Confirm Apple Intelligence isn't turned off.
  • Check that you're signed in with an Apple Account in an eligible region.
  • Check for Screen Time restrictions under Content & Privacy that block intelligence features, especially on a managed or family Mac.
  • If your Mac is managed by an organization, device management may disable Siri AI.

Joined the waitlist, but nothing after a day:

  • Confirm the Mac has been online and not sleeping. The approval and download need a connection.
  • Check free storage.
  • Sign out of your Apple Account and back in only as a last resort, since it affects iCloud sync.

Siri AI works, but gives generic errors:

Some users report non-specific error messages across Apple Intelligence features in the first days. Server load during a staged rollout is a likely factor. Wait a few hours before troubleshooting further, and check Apple's System Status page.

What you get, and what the beta limits are

When it's working, Siri AI brings broad world knowledge, understanding of personal context across Messages, Mail, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders, awareness of what's on screen, and actions across apps. On the Mac, it lives in Spotlight, in its own Siri app, and in the Ask Siri option in context menus.

Know the limits before you rely on it:

  • It's a beta, with daily usage limits.
  • English only for now. Apple has said French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish will follow in October.
  • Some server-based image features have their own daily limits, with more access tied to certain iCloud+ plans.

Don't want Siri AI after all?
