Golden Gate has been out since Monday, September 14. In that time, the conversation has split into two camps: people who think it's the most pleasant macOS in years, and people who installed it and immediately hit something that broke their workflow.

Both are right, just about different things. We went through the first days of discussion on the MacRumors forums and the main Mac subreddits, plus advisories from IT departments and pro audio retailers, and grouped what we found by topic.

How to read this. Forum reports are self-selected. People with problems post; people without problems mostly don't. A single thread doesn't mean a widespread bug, and a popular thread doesn't prove the cause is macOS rather than an app. We note how widespread each report looks and whether there's a known workaround.

The overall mood

More positive than a typical .0 release, and much more positive than Tahoe a year ago.

The most upvoted Golden Gate posts in r/MacOS this week are variations of "this is actually good," with praise focused on stability and responsiveness. Owners of older Apple silicon Macs, especially base M1 models, tend to describe it as closer to Sequoia in feel than Tahoe. The dissent is real but narrower: specific broken behaviors, not a general sense that the system is worse.

A small but persistent group reports noticing no differences at all, which, for a refinement release, is arguably a compliment.

What people like

The interface fixes. Consistent window corners, fewer menu icons, edge-to-edge sidebars with colored icons, and the Liquid Glass transparency control come up again and again, often from people who disliked Tahoe's look.

Responsiveness compared with Tahoe. Especially on M1 and M2 Macs. One M1 owner describes video calls that no longer stutter the way they did on Tahoe; others mention fewer micro-stutters in everyday use. These are impressions, not measurements, and some come from people who upgraded directly from Sequoia.

Small quality-of-life changes. A forum thread collecting these is one of the more active ones. One that gets singled out: AirPlay to a Mac can now appear in a window instead of taking over the whole screen.

What people are reporting

Mission Control and Spaces

How widespread: The biggest functional complaint of the week. A post in r/MacOS calling Mission Control in Golden Gate a mess drew nearly 600 upvotes, on top of several smaller forum threads.

Reports include Mission Control keyboard shortcuts not responding, App Exposé no longer showing minimized windows, Assign to Desktop not sticking for some apps, and odd behavior with full-screen apps. Some reports also mention missing windows and trouble moving full-screen apps between displays.

There's a second, separate problem that looks similar. Mouse utilities that let a side button switch Spaces or open Mission Control stopped doing so, while clicks and scrolling keep working. In the case of Mac Mouse Fix, the developers explained why: the app simulated trackpad gestures by writing undocumented fields into system events, and macOS 27 no longer reads those fields. A fix exists in the project's source code but hadn't reached an official release by September 17; the project published a temporary build for affected users.

Try this: Check System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Mission Control and re-assign any shortcut that isn't working. If you use a mouse or trackpad utility, test Mission Control with the built-in trackpad or the keyboard first. If those work, the utility is the problem: check its GitHub issues or release page for a Golden Gate build. If they don't, it's macOS, and there's no Apple fix yet.

Choppy scrolling and animations

How widespread: One thread with over 30 replies, plus scattered mentions elsewhere. One user raised motion sensitivity with the new animations.

Some of this is almost certainly post-upgrade indexing, which makes everything feel less smooth for the first one to three days. Some of it may not be.

Try this: Confirm indexing has finished (Spotlight and Photos processes idle in Activity Monitor). If scrolling is still rough, turn down Liquid Glass transparency and test again. For motion sensitivity, turn on Reduce Motion in System Settings > Accessibility > Motion.

Audio

How widespread: Several small, unrelated reports. Worth checking if audio matters to your work.

  • Headphone jack. A thread reports no sound from the 3.5 mm jack after upgrading from Tahoe.
  • Audio routing utilities. Users of a popular per-app audio control utility are warning others not to use it with Golden Gate until it's updated. A related report describes AirPlay sound issues.
  • Intel-only plug-ins missing. Pro audio users report Intel-only plug-ins disappearing from Logic Pro after upgrading, because Rosetta wasn't installed on the new system.

Try this: If Intel-only software stops showing up, install Rosetta manually: 

softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

For audio utilities that install drivers or system extensions, check the developer's site for a Golden Gate update before upgrading. Pro audio retailers are, as every year, advising musicians to hold off until their plug-in and interface vendors confirm support.

"System Data" eating storage

How widespread: A few threads, including reports of System Data in the hundreds of gigabytes.

Large System Data right after an upgrade is usually local Time Machine snapshots, leftover installer files, and caches, plus Apple Intelligence models downloading. It often shrinks on its own over days.

Try this: List local snapshots with tmutil listlocalsnapshots /, and remove the full installer from Applications if you downloaded one. Our storage guide covers the rest. If System Data is still growing after a week, that's worth reporting to Apple.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

How widespread: Frequent questions, fewer actual bugs.

Much of the confusion comes from expectations. Siri AI isn't switched on by the upgrade; you request access in System Settings > Siri. It's a beta, English-only at launch, with daily usage limits, and the advanced model requires an M3 or later with 12 GB of memory. There are also threads about generic error messages across Apple Intelligence features, and a popular one about hiding the new "Ask Siri" item from right-click menus.

Try this: Check that you've requested access and that your Siri language is set to English for now. Apple has said Siri AI expands to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October.

App-specific reports

Individual threads mention problems with a Citrix Workspace menu bar, Adobe InDesign, a text expansion utility, and the Globe key no longer opening the emoji picker. Each has only a few replies so far.

Try this: Before upgrading a work Mac, search the long-running community thread tracking working and non-working apps on macOS 27, and check vendor support pages. Some university IT departments have told staff and students to delay the upgrade on machines used for work until they finish testing.

How widespread: Universal. Every major menu bar manager broke during the beta, for the same reason.

Golden Gate renders the whole menu bar as one window. Bartender, Ice, Hidden Bar, and similar apps hid icons by finding and moving the individual windows macOS used to draw for each icon, and those no longer exist. Bartender has a separate Golden Gate beta, with some features, including groups, still missing. Ice's bug report for macOS 27 has been open since June without a maintainer response, and development has moved to a community fork called Thaw. At least one developer has released a new free manager built for 27.

Try this: Golden Gate adds a native overflow button that reveals icons that don't fit, which covers the most common reason people used these apps: icons hidden behind the notch. If you need real hiding and ordering, use a manager that explicitly supports macOS 27, and keep an exported layout. These tools rely on undocumented behavior Apple can change in any update.

Wi-Fi connected, but no internet

How widespread: A recurring report in the main Reddit bug megathread, plus scattered forum mentions.

The Mac joins the network and shows full signal, but nothing loads, even after restarting the Mac, modem, and router.

Try this: First rule out VPN clients and security software that filter network traffic, since those are the usual cause after a major upgrade. During the beta, forum users also reported success turning off Limit IP Address Tracking: System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details next to your network, and switch it off. That setting exists for privacy, so turn it back on once Apple ships a fix. If neither helps, forget the network and join it again.

External displays

How widespread: A small number of reports of multi-monitor setups misbehaving.

Try this: Disconnect and reconnect displays, then re-arrange them in System Settings > Displays. If you rely on a DisplayLink dock, check for a driver update before upgrading.

What's confirmed, and what isn't

None of the issues above has been acknowledged by Apple as of September 17. No 27.0.x bug-fix update had appeared by then either. Two days after launch it did seed macOS 27.2 beta 1 to developers, skipping a public 27.1 beta entirely, so the timing of the first broad fix release is unclear.

What is confirmed, because it's by design rather than a bug: Intel Macs aren't supported, AFP and Time Capsule backups are gone, and Siri AI launches as an English-only beta.

Should this change your decision?

If you rely on Mission Control shortcuts, a Mac audio setup with utilities or Intel plug-ins, or a managed work Mac, wait another week or two and check back. If none of those apply, week one looks encouraging: most reports are narrow, several have workarounds, and the general reaction is better than last year's.
